The top prize, awarded to the new holder of the title Bus Driver of the Year, is worth £1500; the runner-up receives an award worth £1000. Third, fourth and fifth places receive £750, £500 and £250 respectively.
There are also prizes for the best Highway Code result, best driver knowledge test result, and best newcomer and for the competitor who has participated in the most consecutive national finals.
Because the large groups (e.g. First, Stagecoach, Go Ahead, Blazefield, TFL, National Express, Arriva, etc.) concurrently honour their own winners, many of the main awardees receive additional sizeable (£500 or £250) cash prizes.
The winners, of course, also receive cups and trophies. Each driver receives a Certificate of Attendance, subsistence money and other trophies presented each year by sponsors and by the BDoY Council.
The presentation ceremony is normally over by 1700 hours, after which the teams disperse to return home, some replete with trophies, others determined to try again next year. All competitors, whether prizewinners or not, can take much pride in the knowledge that they are among the top 120 drivers in the country.
